Second-Story Deck Repair
Correcting Unsafe Structural Repairs
Completed 2026

PROJECT TYPE
Structural deck repair

CHALLENGE
Unsafe structural modification

SOLUTION
Structural restoration
RESULT
Deck stability restored
Before & After
Existing Conditions
A homeowner contacted us after becoming concerned that his second-story deck was at risk of collapsing. Before reaching out to us, another contractor had performed work on the deck that included removing the original 3/4-inch structural bolts and replacing them with 4-inch by 1/4-inch lag screws. The lateral bracing had also been removed after the homeowner was told it was only cosmetic.
Our Assessment
After inspecting the deck, we found multiple structural issues caused by the previous repairs. The homeowner had installed temporary shoring posts beneath the main deck beam before contacting us, which very well could have prevented a catastrophic failure.
We developed a repair plan that addressed the structural concerns while staying within the homeowner's budget.
The Solution
Our team carefully jacked the deck back to its original position before completing the structural repairs. We replaced three of the original 40-year-old 6x6 support posts, installed the missing 3/4-inch structural bolts, and restored the missing lateral bracing.
Project Outcome
The deck was returned to a properly supported condition after the structural repairs were completed. By correcting the missing structural components and replacing deteriorated support posts, the homeowner's concerns about the deck's stability were addressed while remaining within budget.

Why This Matters
Structural hardware and bracing are essential components of a second-story deck. Removing properly sized bolts or lateral bracing can compromise the stability of the entire structure. Addressing these issues promptly helps restore the deck to a properly supported condition.
