10 Reasons to Choose Structural Insulated Panel (SIP) Construction

  1. Walls and roof panels are made with structural insulated panels The panels are typically made by sandwiching a core of rigid foam plastic insulation between two structural skins of oriented strand board (OSB).  A 6-inch SIP wall outperforms a 6-inch stud wall by R-7, providing 40% more thermal resistance.  (see Fig.1)
  2. SIP homes are engineered to meet or exceed Florida wind load requirements
  3. Straight, flat, true walls so no nail pops and no cracks due to lumber shrinkage
  4. A well-built SIP home does not permit air leakage which means your home will maintain a more even temperature throughout the day and night
  5. SIPs are precision made-to-order, and assemble fast and easily on the job-site, you’ll save on labor, speed up your dry-in and cycle time, and there’s very little waste to worry about.
  6. SIP homes qualify for Energy Star Homes Program
  7. With the energy efficiency of a SIP home, a smaller heating and cooling system is required
  8. Any home plan can be converted to panel plans
  9. SIP panels do not support combustion; are free of Urea Formaldehyde and Chlorofluorocarbons, making them safe for consumers and the environment
  10. SIP panels are a certified “GREEN” product

Whole Wall R-Value
(Fig. 1)

* Study shows how typical installation imperfections such as batts with rounded shoulders, 2%
cavity voids, no compression around wiring, and paper facer stapled to inside of studs,
change the whole-wall R-value of fiberglass insulation rated at R-19 in R-11 in a 2x6 wall
   with studs spaced 24" o.c.

Apples to Apples Realistic Comparison

This chart shows a realistic comparison between SIP wall and stud wall thermal
performance.  Superior design enables even a 4-inch SIP wall to outperform the fatter 2x6 stud wall, despite the stud wall's nominally higher rated insulation. For equal thickness walls, a 6-inch SIP wall beats a 6-inch stud wall by R-7, while the 4-inch SIP wall beats the 2x4 stud wall by R-4, providing 40% more thermal resistance.
